Black Lip Oyster

Black Lip Oyster is one of the oysters found in cape York.

It is found attached to the coastal rocks in places like Cape Melville, Lockhart River, Cape Grenville, Sadd Point, and the coast near Aurukun.

It is a bivalve mollusk and if sand is trapped inside its shell, sometimes it results in a growth of a black pearl that is a desired item in pearling industry.

Like barramundi fish, they are born as males and turn into females later in their life. They can live up to 60 years old.
