On this page is how to go about finding cheap flights to Cairns.

You may be coming from overseas, or you may be from other parts of Australia (a fair few of these people fly up here and then catch up with their Cape York trip mates in Cairns).

If you are from Australia, or rather in Australia, scroll down to 'where to look for cheap flights'.

If you are from overseas, read this page (including 'when is it cheap to go?') but also the page about cheap flights to Australia (opens in a new window so you don't have to leave this page).

When Is It Cheap to Go?

While the international flights to Australia are cheapest during the high season in Cape York, if you fly to Cairns from elsewhere in Australia, things are different.

June and July are the highest season in Cape York because the weather is the best in the northern, and the worst in the southern parts of Australia.

And the same applies to Cairns. While southern Australia is having too cool winter temperatures, up here they are only mild (they are too hot during the hotter months).

And as you would know when it's high season somewhere, the prices go up.

So Australia-wide it's the most expensive time to fly to Cairns, something you may want to consider if you fly from overseas.

You are best off to weigh whether it's cheaper to take a direct flight to Cairns instead of a cheap flight to Sydney/Melbourne and then a domestic one to Cairns.

Cheap Flights to Australia

So how do you go about finding cheap flights to Australia?

As you likely already know - you don't go to your travel agent.

The cheapest flights, and that of course applies to anywhere in the world, are now (and have for a good amount of years been) found online.

The only other main thing to bear in mind is - start looking early. The last minute flights that Europeans are used to, don't work with tickets to Australia.

But there a few other things that are good to know.

When Is It Cheap to Go?

Yes - there are expensive times and cheap times of the year, and if you are heading to Cape York during the high season, the luck is on your side.

The cheapest time to fly to Australia is during the summer of the Northern Hemisphere, when people generally want to enjoy their own summer instead of flying to Australia.

The prices gradually go up after that, and peak in the Christmas - New Year time.

They then decrease through our Wet Season, to hit the bottom in June - July.

Where in Australia to Fly?

Another factor that affects your price is where in Australia you fly.

Prices tend to be the cheapest if you fly to the larger, southern cities, particularly Sydney and Melbourne.

In case you are coming to Cape York or otherwise want to end up in Cairns, flights to Cairns are also often cheap from Darwin and Brisbane.

In that case, read more about cheap flights to Cairns.
