Dog Guide - Archer Point

Dog Guide - Archer Point

Hi Katrin and fellow Cape Yorkian travelers,

Just been pawing through the Doggy guide...great guide btw and just $7!!!

Anyhooo, I noticed Archer Point gets a big thumbs up for camping with dogs.

But I'm now a bit confused as Cooks Shire Council via:

http://www.archerpoint.com.au/visiting-archer-point/

is saying camping is with the consent of the Traditional Owners and requires a permit from the council offices in Cooktown and the council is "requesting" that no domestic animals (e.g. horses, dogs) be "kept" at Archer Point so that the area can be enjoyed by all people.

I would prefer to avoid any pedantic arguments with locals and officials on the wording as it kinda suggest dogs are not welcome here now - thoughts?

Hi Carl,
by: Katrin

Thank you :-)

The Traditional Owners have a ranger base there, however Archer Point remains Cook Shire Council's Free Camping Area with no permits issued by the Council, and no restrictions for dogs (just the usual that they need to be kept under control so that they don't bother other campers, of course).

The website you read is not Cook Shire Council's, but the Traditional Owners' and the information that you wrote, if that is the exact wording on the website then that is misleading information.

It is a good idea to drop into the ranger base and show respect by saying Godday to the Traditional Owners, however the camping rules remain officially those of the Cook Shire Council (07) 4069 5444.

Happy camping :-)

Hi again Carl,

As I have just updated the Doggie Guide (as of January 2018) - the little room for confusion that was there with the rules at the Archer Point camping, has been fixed :-)

Please give me an email through the Contact Us page on this website, and I will send you the latest version, included in the price :-)
