Suitable car to CYP

I'm getting mixed advice on what vehicle to use, some say we need a 4wd, some say plenty of people have made it in non 4wd, even the Austin7!

We plan to keep to 'ordinary' roads and go in August 2016.
We'll be using a Holden ute, or maybe a Hilux.

Of course we're getting advice from people who've never been too.

Hello

It is possible come to Cape York in a 2wd vehicle on the ordinary access roads - bearing in mind the almost 600 km of corrugated dirt road - one way. The stronger the vehicle and the more clearance it has the better. I have seen ordinary cars and all wheel drives of an urban nature up here and they do tend to get a lot of damage and wear - even when driven carefully. So yes it is possible but I wouldn't do it, personally, it also severely limits the amount of places that you can go to

I would most highly recommend to all travellers to have the highest form of roadside assistance and insurance
