Travelling to Cape York in a standard off road vehicle

by Selvan S

Hi,

I have a Toyota Prado 2007 - 120 series diesel 3L motor manual model without lift, winch or bull bar. I'm planning to travel to Cape York this year with my standard vehicle and another 4 vehicle fleet. Other all vehicles have everything - bull bars, winches and all lifted while I have all terrain tyres and a snorkel only.

We are planning to travel OTT and a few other area My question is can we complete OTT with my standard vehicle. I'm happy to travel through the chicken tracks at Gunshot and few areas. If necessary.

If you approve of the idea, that it can be done with no issues, where would could I install my recovery points?

Currently I have factory welded towing points only. I did shop around and found a good recovery points in the market However, my question is, even after installation, how are the cable or ropes going to be aligned in a straight line as the bumper edge appears lower than the recovery points.

Thanks for help.

The Prado should be good enough to do the OTT, the track is not really difficult with good driving techniques, including driving water crossings and sandy water crossings.

Make sure that your snorkel is waterproof, the factory points are usually fine at the front, a tow bar at the rear is better if you have one. A second spare is helpful as well. The lighter your vehicle is the better it will perform off road.

Get RACQ Premium or the equivalent in your state and also 4WD or comprehensive insurance. If it all goes pear shaped then ring either RACQ 13 11 11 or Cape York Spares and Repairs 07 4069 3803
