Trip Planner Checklist
Trip Planner Checklist
Planning of a Cape York trip can be a bit overwhelming, so here is a trip planner checklist to get you started.
The most obvious things to think about first are how to get here and what means to use to get around; what kind of accommodation to rely on; how long time to plan for the trip, and what time of the year is most suitable to go.

Australian Climate - When to Go?
The climate of Cape York and the rest of northern Australia is tropical. We have just two seasons - the Wet (rainy) and the Dry (sunny). Part of this climate are powerful thunderstorms, long lasting moonsoonal rains, and tropical cyclones (hurricanes).

Cheap Flights to Australia
It is easy to drive from the rest of Australia to Cape York, but overseas visitors will have to fly to Australia first. Cairns has got an international airport, but often your flight has a stopover in Brisbane, Sydney or some other larger cities in Australia.

Trip Planner Checklist - Getting Around
There is really only one way to get around in Cape York and it is by a 4WD vehicle. Whether you have it, plan to buy it or rent it in Cairns, or join a 4WD tour depends on what you have or want, and how much time and money you want to spend.

Accommodation
There are now different kinds of accommodation available in Cape York, but the better choices are still found in towns like Cairns, Port Douglas, Mareeba, Cooktown and Weipa. In the rest of Cape York, it's best to rely on bush camping.
