Umagico Campgrounds Closed???

Umagico Campgrounds Closed???

by Wendy

I just read on here that the Umagico campgrounds are closed this year.

Is the closure permanent?

We were hoping to stay there.

Hmmmm Which one to stay at now.

Any suggestions?

Thanks Wendy

Hi Wendy,
by: Katrin

Yes, unfortunately that camp ground is closed now and what they have said is that the closure is permanent.

There are also Seisia and Loyalty Beach not too far, but they are more expensive than Umagico was.

There are beautiful free camping spots but to learn where you can camp for free and be legal in the area up there as well as the whole Cape York peninsula you would have to buy the Destination Guide.

You can do the whole trip without paying for a single night :-)

The guide has paid for itself during the first night ;-)

UPDATE
by: Katrin

UPDATE - The camping ground is open as of September 2014 - went checking myself on my way up.

Will check on my way back down what caused them to tell me a few months earlier that it was closed.

But the main thing is, it is NOT closed at this moment.

UPDATE
by: Katrin

Dropped in on the way back and was told that the reason for the confusion was ownership change.

I rang them in April, talking to the old owners who did apparently not intend to open it.

The new owners had taken over in June - so there you have the reason for the incorrect information having been up for a few months in 2014.
