Up the western coast of Cape York?

by Ben

Planning a trip to Cape York.

Can you get from Karumba around to Weipa up the side of the Gulf or do you have to go over to Chillagoe then up???

Any info would be great.

Hi Ben,

No you cannot get all the way up the west coast to Weipa.

You can get for a little while, you can go through Kowanyama and Pormpuraaw on the south west coast (no alcohol allowed, Aboriginal land camping permits needed, full details in Destination Guide), but from Pormpuraaw you have no way but turn east to Musgrave, and take Peninsula Developmental Road up from there.

So you can avoid Chillagoe and most of Burke Developmental Road, but most travellers (who come from west) do choose to go through Chillagoe, Mareeba and then the Peninsula Developmental Road up from there. The Cape York Pocket Guide also gives you more information, a basic map, and you can download for FREE.
