Visit Cape York Destination Guide

This complete, 300-pages Visit Cape York Destination Guide is all you ever need to successfully complete your trip and enjoy it

Visit Cape York

In the early stages of planning you needed the FREE Cape York Travel Pocket Guide.

It got you started with things like when to visit Cape York, how to get here and get around, what kind of accommodation you would like to look at or whether you'd prefer FREE camping; what is there to see and do, how much time to plan for the trip, and roughly what it will cost you.

It gave you a good idea about it all, and helped you to make the big decisions, but it had no bigger detail which you need in the next planning stage.

The Full Visit Cape York Destination Guide has all the detail you ever need.

With 300 pages it is SIX TIMES the size of the pocket guide, and more than two thirds of the book are destination pages
.

(You can buy it in the end of this page).

This 300-Page Visit Cape York Destination Guide Contains

* Destination pages with full detail about what there is to see and do, how long time you are likely spend in a place, and practical information with opening hours, addresses and phone numbers of the local tourist information centre, bank and post office, medical centre, pharmacy and closest hospital, grocery shop, pub and bottle shop, RACQ and car mechanics...

* Each place, big or small, also has a list of camping, accommodation and tour operators
including fishing, croc spotting, scenic flights, and trips to the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait Islands - all with details on what kind of tours and accommodation they offer and what are the prices. And of course, FREE camping sites in detail.

* In larger places, shopping and eating out including opening hours (or whether a place is open for lunch or dinner), and what kind of food they serve. It's great to have a break from bush cooking while you visit Cape York.

Hi Katrin,

Thank you for one of the most informative and useful books on Cape York.

We are planning a trip in June 2014 with friends and I have bought your full book.

I have only just briefly skimmed though it at this stage and I LOVE IT!!!!

The amount of information in it is amazing.

I am so glad the day I signed up to your newsletter. I feel more confident in planning a trip now.

I look forward to your newsletters and the trip next year.

-- Kylie Cox, Australia

I really enjoy the destination guide, it's very useful and it has been the focus of my planning and research.

Well done!

-- Sherif, Australia

Have just started reading you guide. Fantastic, informative & the photos are great.

Congratulations on a well written guide.

-- Mollie Charalambous, Australia

* Maps to give you a good idea about the area while reading, and also when you visit Cape York. They are not overloaded with information, but have the places that are mentioned in the text, which is all you want.

* Practical information about vehicle preparation and what to bring, where are the fuel stations and how long is it between them.. What EFTPOS and banking facilities are available where (no pages are simply repeated from the FREE pocket guide. If there has been the same headline in the pocket guide, the section in the destination guide is longer and has all the detail that you need to visit Cape York)

* Things you need to know: quarantine rules that also apply to you as a traveller; Aboriginal land alcohol restrictions and where exactly they apply; in what shires do you need a permit to enter the land, and/or to stay over night - and how and when you have to apply

* Accommodation - where to get a break from camping and enjoy a night in an air conditioned room (there is first a summary on information pages, then full detail with contact details and prices on destination pages)

* Camping on Aboriginal Land, and the new rules about camping in national parks. How to get around the new National Parks rules that make it almost impossible for most Cape York travellers - if you haven't booked ahead you may have no choice but camp outside. The good thing is - it's often FREE.

* FREE camping spots along the way to Cape York from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Northern Territory

* FREE camping spots in Cape York. (these are first shortly listed in the information section, and later in more detail on destination pages).

The FREE camping spots alone will save you the money you paid for this book during your first night's camping! ;-)

* How to get around - you can combine driving with flying, a boat trip, and you can also join a tag-along tour that makes self driving feel safer. What boats do the trips, what airlines fly where in Cape York and how to contact them (again, nothing is repeated from the pocket guide, there is more information and everything has full detail)

* Self driving - road distances, corrugations, dips, loose surfaces, bulldust, dust holes, what do think about when crossing creeks and rivers. What you should check daily on your vehicle
.

* Activities -
what are the good four wheel drive tracks that you should not miss? Where are the best spots for fishing, yabbying, mud crabbing? Where are the best swimming holes for a cool dip? Where are the good places for bushwalks? Where can you see carnivorous plants? What are the places where you have good chances to spot some of Cape York's famous unique birds and animals?

We love your Destination Guide book. So easy to read & full of great info!

I was looking for info for our trip up the Cape next year and your site came up and I got literally LOST in it.

I ended up buying your book over the internet and last night, Ian, my husband and I, poured over it.

We love it!!!

Let me congratulate you on a superb site and a magnificent book. We shall spend many enjoyable hours reading it I am sure.

Thanks so much, you've done a great job with the web site and destination guides - we've downloaded both - and found so much info handy.

-- Tahlai, Australia

* Fishing, yabbying and mud crabbing rules in full detail - bag limits, size limits, no-take species, closed seasons, restricted places, special rules for fishing in the waters of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which reaches right to the shore. Very good to know when you visit Cape York as there is a lot of excellent fishing to do.

* Remoteness, how it can be dangerous, and how to keep safe while you visit Cape York and its back tracks.

* What dangerous animals are found in Cape York and how to avoid them. Contact details to hospitals and Royal Flying Doctor Service.

* Background reading about Cape York's geology, history, and its unique plants and animals, all of which you have the chances see on your visit to Cape York. There is a separate section about where to spot the birds and animals that you find nowhere else in Australia.

Thanks Katrin your book looks fantastic, just what I was looking for.

Truly this is the best Insider's Guide that I have ever read. Crammed full of information that is practical, helpful and highly extensive. From the colloquial Glossary all the way through to the last page it held my interest.

I loved the statement that "The only thing you need after this is a proper, detailed map." Ain't that the truth!

This guide is everything that you need to know about this amazing area of Australia. An essential companion on your Cape York trip.

We are back and we had the time of our life! Your book was with us and used everywhere, every day! Thanks for making our trip so easy!

-- The Wright family, NSW, Australia

* Contact details to national park rangers, indigenous councils, where to check the current weather and cyclones, and check if a particular road is open or closed exactly when you visit Cape York.

* All the prices and other detail in this book are updated once a year, early in each year, before the new season.

Why this book by ME?

I did not write this book about a corner of Australia that I visited. I wrote this book about the corner of Australia where I live.

I have lived here since 2003 so the book, and this website, are written by a local.

I am a passionate traveller who always does all the back tracks so I surely do my research work in detail ;-)

But I haven't always been a local here, I have lived down in Sydney, so I also know what questions you will have as a traveller. And I am originally from Europe, so I also know what questions you, international travellers have before you visit Cape York and the rest of Australia.

holden jackaroo
My old Holden Jackaroo.

I am obviously also a woman, something that has absolutely not been of any disadvantage when writing about four wheel driving!

I did my first trip to Cape York on my own and with absolutely no four wheel drive experience. I was shown the night before I left how to use a four wheel drive, and I had never tried it in practice before I crossed my first creek in Cape York.

(IF A GIRL CAN DO IT, YOU CAN! :-)

That means, I also know how you feel, and what you need to know if you are a total stranger to four wheel driving.

P.S. Note that I am not saying that you need no skills at all to drive through all crossings! What I am saying is that even if you are totally inexperienced, you don't need to be scared, you can skip the parts that are too hard for you, because there are different bypass tracks (details in the book; and you do need common sense).

I had a good luck to meet people who helped me through the hardest crossings on my first trip. If I hadn't, I would have had to take bypass tracks in the northern end of the OTT.
But hey, things have changed from the first time too :-) Last time after coming down the Gunshot I had some blokes to say, "Looks like I will give it a go!" (you can read more about me here).

Also thanks to Rob Dawson and other guys who have, over the years given me a lot of detailed knowledge about all the creek crossings and four wheel driving in general.

And detailed information about Cape York is NOT easy to come by.

A lot of work has gone into researching places in detail, finding out which bush camping spots are actually free, where do the alcohol restrictions actually apply, and getting all the contact details, opening hours, prices for you so that you can sit back and enjoy your trip :-)

Hi, just wanted to thank you for the website, guide book and newsletter. All are informative, fun and easy to read.

Love the no bull approach.

Please keep up the good work and may 2013 wet be safe and as long or short as you would prefer. Thanks again.

-- Dave, Australia

If you have this guide in your hand you will not miss out on anything! I lived a couple of years in Cooktown and went around a fair bit in the surroundings, and I can tell, Katrin knows what she is talking about.

The guide is fully packed with information, which is easily navigated by a terrific table of content, complete with a lot of useful links if one likes to dig even deeper into certain subjects. Thanks Katrin for your excellent “reference work” on Cape York.

Love your guide and newsletter. Timely, full of essential information.
Planning to come up to the Cape in late August. Regards from an avid follower.

-- Willem Goeman, Australia

Another question that I get a lot...

Why Buy an E-book?

"I am used to normal books and I am not sure if I will like an e-book."

Read here about what is an e-book (opens in a new window), and why it is actually BETTER than 'normal' books.

To make it short:

* ebooks can be read both in paper format and on the computer screen, which means

* you can click on links to visit relevant websites with updated prices and other information about a place/company,

*
contact accommodation etc by email (no cost as opposed to phone calls - when you do many it does add up!),

*
and also you can click on internal links, which directly move you to another, relevant page in the e-book. No need to scroll when looking for a page (the best place to do that is in the TOC - Table of Contents in the beginning of the book).

* while information in the 'normal' books gets outdated, ebooks can be updated, and mine constantly is. Once you buy one, you can always get the latest version with new updates for no extra cost. Not the case with 'normal' books :-)

* when you buy a 'normal' book online, you will have to wait while it is shipped to you. When you buy an e-book, you can download it straight away, and start reading it straight away!

*
And last but NOT least - NO SHIPPING COSTS ;-)

No wonder e-books are getting incredibly popular!!!

The Visit Cape York Destination Guide has the same quality as this website, but it is NOT a copy of this website. This website gives you a good idea about what places are like.

But it doesn't have the detail that is so valuable in the late planning stage and of course, on the trip once you visit Cape York.

With the Visit Cape York Travel Guide, wherever in Cape York you are, you can look up your closest FREE camping spot, your closest supermarket and bottle shop (and there are not too many!), your closest fuel station, your closest hospital, you name it..

The details go down to prices, phone numbers and opening hours, something that is extremely valuable once on the trip.

AND of course, should I repeat, everything else listed on this page...

It is a proper travel guide with full detail.

Hi Katrin, just got back from the Cape, spent three weeks up there, wanted to say your book was excellent. So much info about everything - we could not have spent our money better. Wonderful job, you deserve a special thank you.

-- Matt Brown, Brisbane, Australia

Thank you for your excellent book, and keep up the good work.

-- Suzanne George, Tasmania

Thanks for a great website and even better guide.
